Rotary Club Meeting - Dr. Ana DeGenna (Superintendent Oxnard School District)
Sep 08, 2026 12:00 PM - 1:15 PM

Dr. Ana DeGenna’s path into education wasn’t one she expected. With an undergraduate degree in economics, she originally imagined a future in public policy. But a substitute teaching job led her to the classroom, where she discovered a deeper purpose. What started as a temporary role quickly became the foundation of a career in public education.

Through those early classroom experiences, she recognized the broader impact of public schools — not just on students, but on the communities they serve. She saw how thriving schools contribute to thriving neighborhoods, and how education is deeply intertwined with opportunity. Teaching led to school leadership, and over time, she became a principal and eventually superintendent.

Her journey represents a full-circle experience. Dr. DeGenna arrived in the United States from Ecuador as a young English learner and was once a student in the very district she now leads. The support she received as a newcomer shaped her path, and over the years, she has served Oxnard students as a teacher and principal. Now, as superintendent, she works to ensure that the same opportunities that shaped her are available to every student who walks through the district’s doors.

Oxnard, she says, is a district with a strong sense of identity. Cultural and linguistic diversity are not just present, they are celebrated. Even through political shifts, Oxnard has remained committed to biliteracy and multilingualism, a value upheld not only by educators but by the families and communities they serve.

Rotary Club Meeting - Randy Friedman (VCAS Public Info Officer)
Oct 13, 2026
Randy Friedman
Public Information Officer
Ventura County Animal Services

Randy joined VCAS as a volunteer in 2013, walking dogs and creating videos to help animals get adopted.  He then worked in the shelter’s hospital before transitioning to a part-time Extra Help position.  He cleaned kennels and did adoption shows, but he continued to make videos of animals in his spare time.

At that time, VCAS was transitioning to a No-Kill shelter, which created the need for a full-time media position.  Randy was asked to take over the shelter’s social media and the marketing of animals with a special focus on large-breed dogs.

In 2017, Randy became the agency’s unofficial spokesperson during the Thomas Fire and has since expanded his role to include fundraising, event planning, and project management.  He helped organize two shelter Galas, modernized the agency’s website, and forged partnerships with local businesses.  In 2024, VCAS formalized the position and Randy was appointed the agency’s first Public Information Officer.

Outside of work, Randy enjoys spending time with friends and family, and with his Jack Russell Terrier, Josie, who he adopted from VCAS in 2016 and who comes to work with him each day!

Randy says he dreams of a day when shelters are no longer needed, where every animal has a loving, permanent home.

Rotary Club Meeting - Kevin Brannon (Reel Guppy Outdoors CEO)
Feb 09, 2027 12:00 PM - 1:15 PM
About the Speaker:

Reel Guppy Outdoors founder, Kevin Brannon saw a need for a free youth fishing program in his local community. Many kids would tell him they wished they had someone to take them fishing too, whenever he and his kids would pile into the car, fishing rods and tackle in tow.He himself had grown up with uncertainty, single parent household, low income, after his father passed away. Then it was foster homes and shelters, a modern-day Dickensian childhood.

With little other opportunity, yet living just a block from Port Hueneme Pier, he would spend hours there, fishing. Required to be ever resourceful, he would recover used fishing line and hooks. With a tin can as his fishing pole, and any leftover bait he could scrounge from the pier's cleaning tables, he was a modernday Huck Fin.

By age 9, he had worked his way aboard the local party-boats. As a "pin-head," he helped paying passengers with their fishing, untangling lines, sacking fish and such.

Out on the boats was a haven of safety and solitude, a place of security and certainty in his otherwise unstable childhood. This time imprinted a passion for fishing and the sea, an ethic valuing helping others.

He carries these values to this day, and they form the heart and soul of the Reel Guppy Outdoors program. Now, some 25 years later, Brannon produces a TV show he started while attending Oxnard College. Reel Anglers Fishing Show California currently televised in California produces the Reel Guppy Outdoor.

Brannon saw it as his purpose, sharing his connection with the ocean and outdoors with others, to foster in others the sense of belonging and purpose he found in fishing. With the promise of fun and adventure as bait, he fosters a sense of value in learning, self motivation, leadership and success in the young people he takes fishing. As a survivor of uncertain times, he wants to pass on the survival strategies that saved him.
